Tre Valli Varesine: the detailed presentation

The Three Varésine Valleys (Tre Valli Varesine) are the three valleys located north of Varese where cyclists from the Lombard city usually go to ride. It has been a long time since the event that bears their name stopped setting wheels there, a memory of a time when the course sometimes ventured as far as the nearby Swiss lakes, offering us breathtaking landscapes. The organizers of the third round of the Tryptique Lombard have for several years chosen a less picturesque, but equally demanding race format, by designing their race around successive loops between Lake Varese and the town where the finish is located. As the city is located in a balcony on the first foothills of the Alps, the profile now resembles a saw with increasingly sharp teeth.

This year, the two final loops have been significantly modified, and it is the legendary Salita dei Ronchi, used during the 2008 World Cup, which will now carry the peloton to Varése: a more difficult climb, especially at its base and what’s more in a much nicer country setting. The route of the large loop which concludes the day has also been modified and lengthened since it will go further west to seek out the Salita delle Cinque Piante before ending with the same climb of the Ronchi.

The Three Valleys of Varésine occupy an enviable place on the calendar of this beautiful Italian week, far enough away from the Tour of Lombardy not to scare away the protagonists of the weekend’s Monument. Traditionally, the starting list is particularly extensive, reaching the level of that of the Emilie tour. Seventeen of the eighteen World Teams will therefore be at the start this Tuesday (absent: Arkéa), and will mostly present the best pieces from their collection: thus, are announced at the start Cake makerEvenepoel, Jorgenson, Hiirschi, Mas… let’s just hope that the rain forecast does not disrupt the race (and the TV transmission!) and does not dissuade the Lombardia favorites from taking full part in this great event.

The last three podiums:
2021 : 1. Alessandro De Marchi – 2. Davide Formolo – 3. Tadej Pogačar
2022 : 1. Tadej Pogačar – 2. Sergio Higuita – 3. Alejandro Valverde
2023: 1. Ilan van Wilder – 2. Richard Carapaz – 3. Aleksandr Vlasov

THE RACE

The departure will be even closer to Varese, which will avoid going around the town of Busto Arsizio twice and will undoubtedly delight the honorable citizens of the place. A first false flat will lead the peloton to Morazzone using (in the other direction) part of the road used on the Coppa Bernocchi circuit. From km 22.2, we will be at the foot of the first climb towards Varese, the “salita dei Ronchi”, an access which has not been used in recent years; we will take it a total of ten times during the day, since it will also conclude each of the nine loops that make up the route. After 3.2 km of ascent (at 4.6% average) and 700 meters of very slightly descending false flat, the finish line will be crossed for the first time at km 26.1.
There will then begin 7 laps of a first loop (“giro corto”) of 15.9 km (15.6 measured) which after a half-turn thanks to a roundabout begins with the climb of Montello (2 km at 5%), from where a series of descents and false flats bring you back to lake level to find the Ronchi and the finish.
At the end of these 7 laps, we will be at km 137.6 (according to the organizers) and it will be time to tackle the two laps of the long loop (“giro lungo”) of 31.35 km (30.85 measured ) ; this begins like the first loop with the ascent of Montello and the descent to lake level but we will then turn right for 4.3 km flat until Oltrana al Lago, foot of the “salita dei 5 Piante” ( named after a park located on the way up). This climb (2.8 km at 5.2%) is quite irregular at the foot with an alternation of steep slopes and flat parts over 2 kilometers, then 800 narrow meters at 9% to the village of Barasso (last 250 meters at 13%). We will then find a wider street on a false level (3%) for 2 kilometers up to Casciago, before going back down to lake level, and ending with this unmissable climb of the Ronchi.

Distance (excluding neutralized 9 km): 200.3 km (197.1 measured) – elevation gain + estimated at 3,150 m – RidewithGPS: 228050703
Actual departure: 12:15 p.m. – Arrival scheduled around 4:42 p.m. / 5:40 p.m.
