Crazy race in the juniors. After 127 kilometres in the pouring rain, Italian Lorenzo Finn won solo in Zurich. The 18-year-old took advantage of the heavy fall of reigning world champion Albert Philipsen (Denmark) to cruise to an easy victory. He finished ahead of Briton Sebastian Grindley (+ 2’05”) and Dutchman Senna Remijn (+ 3’06”).
The two favorites out of the running
In terrible weather, crossing the finish line already seemed like an achievement for the junior riders taking part in this road race of the 2024 World Championships. Right from the start, the Danish team of the ultra-favorite Albert Philipsen set a high tempo. So much so that there were only 15 riders left who could dream of world glory at the halfway point.
Quickly attacking, Lorenzo Finn isolated himself for the first time in the lead 60 kilometers from the line. Behind, Albert Philipsen continued his skimming until he blew away the other big favorite, the Frenchman Paul Seixas, winner of the time trial last Monday. Freezing, the future rider of the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale (18 years old) finally finished in 7th place (+ 4’11”).
At 25 kilometres, there were only four left who could compete for the title. But after a new attack by Albert Philipsen, a real bolt from the blue struck the race. The Dane, who seemed the strongest, ended up on the ground after a fall in a right-hand bend. The reigning world champion retired and returned home, leaving Lorenzo Finn with a clear path.

The reaction of a frozen Paul Seixas
It was very, very tough. I wasn’t having a great day. I tried to survive. I felt pretty good at the start of the race but I have a lot of work to do to improve on the descents on the wet road. I had to make a lot of effort to get back into position and with a lap and a half to go I felt it was getting very difficult. I didn’t necessarily have the best recovery after the time trial. You have to accept that six riders were stronger today. It’s tough but I’ll come back.
