This Wednesday, the Dutchman Mathieu van de Poel won the first stage of the Tour du Luxembourg, ahead of the Frenchman Christophe Laporte.

Mathieu van der Poel had the last word. This Wednesday, the Dutchman won, in a sprint and at the end of a slight climb, the first stage of the 84th edition of the Tour du Luxembourg, after having started his effort just 150 meters from the line. Behind the rider of the Belgian Alpecin-Deceuninck team, we find the Frenchman Christophe Laporte, who was not really able to fight and who must be content with second place, within a reduced group. PHowever, in the final, his Dutch team Visma | Lease a Bike showed their impressive collective strength, but it was not enough. In third place, we find the Dane Andreas Kron (Lotto Dstny). Two other Frenchmen tried to join the fight for victory. Finally, Jordan Labrosse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) finished tenth, while Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) had to settle for thirteenth place.

Van der Poel, 50th victory

This first stage was 158 kilometres long and ran around the capital Luxembourg, on a hilly course. A breakaway was formed. This leading group was made up of four men: the Italian Mattia Bais (Team Polti Kometa), the Dutchman Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal Quick-Step), the Belgian Vincent Van Hemelen (Team Flanders – Baloise) and the Luxembourger Alexandre Kess (Sélection du Luxembourg). Their lead grew to 7′, but the last two survivors (Bais and Reinderink) were caught at the top of the last difficulty of the day, the Stafelter hill. Van der Poel has won his 50th career race, his fourth this season and his first since - in April. The reigning world road cycling champion is taking part in his last stage race before putting his title back on the line at the world championships in Zurich in ten days’ time.
