Admired for his disconcerting dribbling, mocked for his wasteful finishing, Ousmane Dembélé added quality in the final move without sacrificing any of his rare talent in the one-on-one, Monday evening, against Belgium (2-0). Author of a splendid strike lodged under the bar of Casteels after a succession of feints, close to a double ten minutes later, the twirling PSG winger also worked hard to contain the will-o’-the-wisp Jérémy Doku by making his contribution to the defensive effort, in support of Jules Koundé. “It’s difficult to hold this player in one-on-one, he’s very strong,” admitted Dembelé on TF1. “He’s powerful too, he’s fast. We had to take him on in pairs and I think we did it very well with Jules.”
Dembélé’s primary nature being dribbling, the tightrope walker distinguished himself above all in provocation with the ball at his feet, making the Belgian defense dizzy throughout the match, whether through his unique ball handling or the feints of which he has the secret, the former Barcelona player put on a show.
He also allowed himself a little treat with this delicious little bridge to be enjoyed without moderation, delivered to Jérémy Doku, who laughed in the process to have so easily taken the bait. “We didn’t speak to each other after but we talked a little on the pitch”, smiled Dembélé on TF1’s microphone. “We teased each other a little but it wasn’t mean. With Jules (Koundé) we said to each other that he was going to get into situations. I also told Michael (Olise) that I was going to give him a little bridge.”
