Makelele soon to return to the bench?

Claude Makelele is expected to return to action soon. According to Foot Mercato, the French coach is close to signing with Asteras Tripolis, who play in the Greek first division. The Peloponnese club is currently fifth in the Superleague Ellada after three games, with one win, one draw and one loss. The former France team leader has reportedly been offered a one-year contract (plus an optional year) with the Tripoli team, which is backed by solid investors and has an international squad with many Spanish speakers.

Enough to convince Makelele, who has not worn the head coach’s costume since leaving KAS Eupen (Belgium) in August 2019. Before that, the former Real Madrid and PSG midfielder coached Sporting Club de Bastia for a few months in 2014. He was also assistant at Paris and then Swansea, and technical director at Monaco. In recent years, the native of Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) has also lent a hand to Chelsea, whose colours he wore during his playing career.

An agreement could be reached quickly between the 2006 world champion runner-up and the leaders of Asteras Tripolis, who have played two Europa League campaigns without winning a single major trophy in their history.

If his arrival at the Theodoros-Kolokotronis stadium (nearly 8,000 seats) is confirmed, Claude Makelele could be accompanied by Paul Clement, Carlo Ancelotti’s former assistant, and Raphaël Fèvre, a former PSG physical trainer.
