Placarded in Italy, Victor Osimhen has found his smile again in Turkey. The Nigerian striker has been looking for a place to stay at all costs since he expressed at the end of last season his desire to no longer play in Serie A. The saga has dragged on throughout the summer but will soon come to an end, expected in the next few hours since the player has travelled to Turkey, where he is expected to sign for Galatasaray after extending his contract by one year with Napoli.

The international set foot in Istanbul last night, at nearly 4am, and has already been able to gauge his popularity rating with his new supporters who cheered him in a deafening din at the airport. Several thousand wild Turkish fans chanted his name in a fiery atmosphere. With a Galatasaray scarf around his neck, Osimhen took the time to savour “a truly incredible atmosphere” before delivering his first statements to the press as he left the airport.

In a stalemate in Serie A

“Dries Mertens played here. I spoke with him, he helped me a lot before I left. I’m very happy to be here, I can’t wait to be on the pitch.” Victor Osimhen left the venue in a private vehicle chartered for the occasion. A major contributor to the Scudetto acquired by Napoli in 2023, Osimhen will undergo his medical examination and sign his contract immediately afterwards. “What else do you want us to do?” joked the Galatasaray general manager when asked about the rest of the day, with journalists wondering whether this matter could be concluded quickly.

Unable to find a club of his size in Europe, Victor Osimhen found himself in a dead end after the transfer market closed in most major leagues. The situation had even become untenable for the player since his club no longer counted on him at all, to the point of leaving him out of the first team for the Italian championship. Left out of Napoli’s list in Serie A, Victor Osimhen was invited to join another league to play this season. Which he is about to do in Turkey.
