The president-elect of the United States announced this Friday, January 17 that the location of his inauguration ceremony, scheduled for January 20, would finally take place inside the capitol. He invokes the freezing cold to motivate this change.
A very symbolic change. United States President Donald Trump takes the reins of the United States during an inauguration ceremony this Monday, January 20, which will not take place outdoors as is traditionally the case. It will be held inside the Capitol rotunda. The reason? Freezing temperatures predicted in Washington.
“The weather forecast for Washington DC could bring record low temperatures. (…) I don't want people to get hurt in any way,” wrote Donald Trump in a message on the Truth Social network, adding:
“Conditions are dangerous for the tens of thousands of law enforcement personnel, first responders, police dogs and even horses, as well as the hundreds of thousands of supporters who will be outside for many hours.”

As a reminder, on January 6, 2021, in the midst of protest by pro-Trump supporters of the result consecrating Joe Biden as the new president, a small group of insurgents stormed the Capitol. An attempted coup by supporters of the Republican candidate causing five deaths, four demonstrators and a police officer who defended the scene.
This is not the first time that Washington DC has been hit by a significant cold snap. In December 2023, a plan for a risk of extreme cold was activated by the governor of this state.
