Aubin Sparfel finally got his result in the World Cup. After winning the Coupe de France by winning seven of the eight rounds, in addition to a bronze medal at the last European Championship, the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale rider did not yet have his reference result at world level. It was done this Sunday, in Zonhoven, despite a missed podium (see ranking). “It went pretty well, I had a good start so I found myself with Del Grosso and Michels, but it was hard to hold them off, they are on top. I made a small technical error which may have cost me the podium, but I was in good shape so I'm happy”he summarizes.
With his small size, Aubin Sparfel still finds it difficult to compete with his main opponents. “When you find yourself rubbing shoulders with Del Grosso and Michels it's difficult, but I'm getting used to it and I hope that later it will be better”. However, that did not prevent Espoir 1 from having fun in Belgium. “It was very technical because there was mud in the passages where there was no sand, but I had fun, I tried to be clean, to do my race”. There was more fun than the day before, in Hulst, where he was hampered by several problems. “I was in great shape yesterday, there were mechanical problems and it’s a shame, but I’m all the more happy to have fun today”.
As a bonus, he was able to spend part of the race with his teammate Léo Bisiaux, who did more than provide moral support since he even gave him a helping hand. “Léo wasn't very well today, so he told me he was going to help me. It was really nice, he took big relays and I was able to finish strong so I thank him “. Although a few seconds are missing from Kay De Bruyckere's 3rd place, the signals are green before taking the start in Besançon, for the next round of the U21 World Cup. “I hope to have as good legs in Besançon, I can’t wait to do battle”. And this time, to get on the podium.
