OM: despite Maupay’s goal, De Zerbi confirms Wahi as number 1 striker

Neal Maupay had a successful debut at the Vélodrome. After a quarter of an hour of warming up against Toulouse before the international break, the striker scored his first goal at the Vélodrome by opening the scoring against Nice, his training club, this Saturday during the 4th day (2-0). “Maupay was very important for us in this match, he is a very good recruit. The pitch will speak for itself in the future”, reacted Roberto De Zerbi after Marseille’s victory.

However, the Italian coach confirmed that Elye Wahi would remain the number one in attack. “Our regular in that position remains Wahi. Maupay is the best possible player in that role. He hits the mark. He really wanted to come to OM. The Brighton players spoke well of him as a player and a boy. He brings us a lot of experience, he is very smart, we need his qualities,” he continued.

An OM that could be improved according to “RDZ”

Satisfied with his team’s “almost perfect” start to the season and the victory they secured on Saturday against their neighbours Nice, the OM coach nevertheless felt that Marseille could still “do a lot better”. “Today we played a great match in terms of will, attention, desire to win. But I didn’t like the match in terms of the game. We can do a lot better. We can move the ball around more, take more responsibility with the ball at our feet. There are a lot of things we can do better. But there’s also character and in that respect, we were very good.”

With this victory, the third of the season, the Phocéens are provisionally leaders of Ligue 1 with 10 points, before the PSG match against Brest. A nice birthday present for the 125 years of the club.
