New rules for cyclists to avoid the “Christmas tree” effect on the road

Since the publication of this decree on November 27, cyclists and other users of EDPM (motorized personal transportation devices), namely electric scooters, monowheels, self-balancing scooters, and hoverboards, are reminded that they have the obligation to be equipped with lighting in the event of reduced visibility. Otherwise, they face a fine of 11 euros.

Some users will tend to opt for a flashing rear light. The law now prohibits it, specifying: “any motorized personal transport vehicle or cycle must be equipped with a rear position light. This fire must not be flashing and must be clearly visible from the rear“. This lighting at the back can only be red.

However, no details regarding the flashing aspect are given regarding the front light. It just has to emit non-glaring, yellow or white light.

The law also gives the possibility of carrying additional lightingsuch as a lighted vest or a lamp attached to the helmet or backpack.

The text also speaks tires with retroreflective devices which can replace the reflectors present in the wheels of the bicycle.
