The startup Posturise offers to carry out a cycling postural study online, at home, all by yourself like a grown-up; at an unbeatable price: €4 per study. The site analyzes a video of you pedaling. A revolution for postural study? Not sure. The designers recognize that it is not worth real bikefitting in the office. But it's a start. We tested Posturise for you.
Postural study democratized with Posturise
Previously reserved for pro cyclists, postural studies are now available for amateurs, even Sunday cyclists, like me. I don't know about you, but it took me four years to do a real postural study.
Four years of knee pain on long distances before taking the plunge. The reasons? The price (not given, call price at €200, however it can go up to €500); time (a good study takes at least two hours and the offices that carry them out may be far from you); motivation (do I really need it?).
The price again: as soon as I opened the doors of the room where I was to do my study, the operator announced to me: “your wedges and your shoes won't do it. We are here to do precision adjustment, and your equipment is rinsed“. Goodbye, then, to my shoes bought ten years ago in Seoul. Hello, the Specialized Torch at €90.
Posturise: the postural study remotely
It is precisely this problem that the startup Posturise is trying to solve. Simply sit on your trainer and record a ten-second video while you pedal. Or even, if you don't have this tool of torture at home, a video of you pedaling backwards, leaning against a wall. You upload the video, wait for the AI to process it. And presto! The site tells you what's okay and what's not.
Posturise takes a much colder and more objective approach
Verdict for me: my saddle is too high, and my handlebars too far back. A shame, when my postural study carried out in the office had precisely concluded that my handlebars were too far forward (which implied a new stem at €40…). Consolation: the height of my hanger is good.
“We have a quite different approach from what is done in the office. During a 'real' postural study, the advice and recommendations are personalized, according to your body type, your practice and your behavior on the bike. Posturise takes a much colder and more objective approach. The AI measures angles formed by your different limbs. It's less personalized, but more objective.“, explains Hugo Durbecq, founder of Posturise.
A complementary approach:It's not a competition“
The study generated online is less precise than an in-office study. It does not take into account the adjustment of the automatic cleats, although it is critical for feeling good on your bike, because the angles are too difficult to see with a video.
“It is not a competition to what is done in the office. This is a first step, which ultimately allows you to move towards a practice.“, underlines Hugo Durbecq. And to give the example of an athlete who carries out a postural study per year, but who does several Posturises throughout the year in order to adjust his bike as finely as possible according to the evolution of its morphology.
Three angles
Concretely, the AI measures three angles formed by your body: that of your elbows, your shoulders and your knees. It compares them to angles recognized by scientific literature as being ideal and advises you on your bike settings accordingly.
It's relatively simple and the answers to it are just as simple. Lower the saddle, lengthen or shorten a stem… And the price is incomparable to an in-office postural study: €4 per individual study, €1.67 per study if you take fifteen at once. Enough to adjust your bike after each meal to be sure to be on top all the time! And it also works to be better on your commute. To try, go to the platform’s website. Test, and tell us.
