A serious road accident involving two vehicles claimed the life of a miner on Wednesday morning in Longueuil, in addition to causing a major traffic jam on Route 116 towards Montreal.
Traffic was blocked for several hours for about one kilometer between Chambly Road and Taschereau Boulevard.
The Longueuil agglomeration police department (SPAL) confirmed the death of one of the two motorists involved in the accident. He had previously been transported to a hospital.
The second driver, also a minor, appeared at the Longueuil courthouse and faces a charge of criminal negligence causing death. He will be back in court on October 19.
Speeding may have been a factor in the crash, police say.
-The two young motorists, each driving a Mini Cooper car, appeared to be participating in a street race, witnesses said.
According to a driver traveling on Route 116, the two motorists passed him on the right at a speed of approximately 200 km/h. One of the vehicles would have skidded, crossed the three lanes, hit a low wall and rolled towards the shoulder.
According to Chantal Ianniciello, who witnessed the accident, the teenagers involved are brothers. The victim was 17 years old.
Work is still underway to repair a Hydro-Québec pole that was severed during the accident.
