The Federal Center of Expertise for Healthcare (KCE) recommends harmonization of data collection in the early phases of an epidemic outbreak. In a press release published Friday, the organization underlines the importance of a rapid and standardized process to support political decisions and initiate clinical trials.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, infectious disease specialists have noted limitations in current mandatory reporting systems for infectious diseases. These devices, which vary depending on the federated entities, slow down the transmission of data to Sciensano and complicate their analysis.
The KCE proposes that the Risk Assessment Group (RAG) and the Risk Management Group (RMG) coordinate a common procedure, capable of being activated quickly in the event of an epidemic or the appearance of a new variant of concern.
Rapid feedback for clinicians
According to the KCE, doctors must benefit from rapid feedback regarding analyzes and the effectiveness of treatments. This mechanism would encourage rapid and complete reporting of observed cases, thus strengthening the health response.
A crucial European dimension
The KCE also emphasizes the importance of coordination with the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The integration of standardized electronic forms would facilitate the analysis and sharing of data at European level.
These recommendations aim to strengthen efficiency and responsiveness to future health crises, building on national and international collaboration.
