A study published on Tuesday, December 10 reveals the deterioration in the mental health of young professionals in the era of Covid-19. Between 2020 and 2021, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts increased significantly among 18-24 year olds in France.
The numbers to know
Public Health France carried out a study on the evolution of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts among working people aged 18 to 75 in mainland France, over more than ten years. The prevalence of suicidal thoughts in this population varied between 3.2% and 4% depending on the year. In 2021, 18-24 year olds, people living alone or without children, those in financial difficulty or poor health, and regular alcohol consumers were at increased risk. The data comes from 'Health Barometers' carried out between 2010 and 2021. Patterns
In 2020 and 2021, male employees had the highest rates of suicidal thoughtswhile women were uniformly affected, regardless of their professional category. The accommodation and catering sectors were the most affected. The causes of suicidal thoughts were mainly family and professional, around 40%. THE suicide attempts were mainly motivated by family reasons (40-45%), followed by professional reasons (9-14%). Harmful work environments, such as harassment or lack of support, accentuate these risks.
