Up to three times greater risk of heart attack and stroke 3 years after Covid infection, new study reveals

Risks doubled

The results of the study are clear: compared to individuals who have not tested positive, patients who contracted a Coronavirus infection in 2020 are twice as likely to be affected by a serious heart condition such as have a heart attack or stroke, or even die, within three years of infection. In people who have been hospitalized due to complications, the risk of a heart attack is even tripled. In this same group, the appearance of other pathologies such as diabetes or peripheral arterial disease is also favored, underlines the study.

“One of the most interesting conclusions”

The revelations made by this new research therefore relate to the longevity of the damage caused by Covid-19, the risks of heart disease after contracting the virus do not seem to diminish over time. “This is one of the most interesting, and even the most surprising, conclusions in my opinion“, indicates Dr. Stanley Hazen, author of the study. An opinion shared by Dr. Patricia Best, cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, in Minnesota: “We’ve known for some time that infections increase the risk of heart attacks. So if you have the flu, if you get an infection, whether it’s bacterial or viral, that increases your risk of a heart attack. But usually it goes away pretty quickly after infection. It’s such a big effect, and I think it’s just because Covid is different from some other infections.

However, the authors of this study admit that they do not know the reasons why this particular virus affects the cardiovascular system so permanently.
