Belgium remains the world leader in vaccine exports

BRUSSELS. The leading country in the world in terms of vaccine exports with 22 billion euros generated in 2023, Belgium is well at the top of the world ranking, ahead of the United States and Ireland. A world leading position highlighted by the sectoral federation bio.be/essenscia during its annual event held this Monday at the Palais d’Egmont. After having made it possible to supply a large part of the world’s population during the Covid-19 crisis thanks to the export of billions of vaccines, these figures once again demonstrate Belgium’s status as the undisputed world leader in terms of vaccines. To maintain this position as an international leader in the development, production and distribution of vaccines and drugs, bio.be/essenscia calls for the deployment of an ambitious pharma and biotech strategy covering the entire value chain, from the laboratory to the patient. .

If scientific and industrial excellence in vaccines has been one of Belgium’s trademarks for decades, it was suddenly remembered by the whole world in 2020. A world paralyzed by a pandemic discovering agility with relief and the know-how of a Belgian ecosystem mastering each stage of development and manufacturing of a vaccine, from clinical trials to production, and capable of transporting billions of doses to all continents in record time. A tour de force made possible thanks to a solid partnership between public administrations, academia, industries and logistics players.

Maintain our leadership position

It was on October 7 that the annual bio.be/essenscia event was held at the Palais d’Egmont in Brussels, dedicated this year to Belgium’s cutting-edge expertise in vaccines (“Innovating in Next-Gen Vaccines, Belgium takes the lead”).
