Why was Didier Raoult sanctioned?

In December 2021, the microbiologist was sentenced at first instance to a reprimand for having promoted hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for Covid-19. A sanction “too lenient with regard to the shortcomings identified“, regretted Dr. Gilles Munier, representative of the Order of Physicians, during Didier Raoult’s appeal hearing, which was held in last June.

By condemning the microbiologist, the disciplinary chamber points to violations of several articles of the public health code. Besides the recommendation of hydroxychloroquine “without established scientific data“, Professor Raoult was also guilty of not having “based in its public positions on confirmed data“, according to the court decision report. He did not “failed to exercise caution and promoted an insufficiently proven treatment“, lists the Order of Physicians.

This conviction was particularly motivated by the clinical trials.wild“on the effects of hydroxychloroquine organized by Didier Raoult with 30,000 patients, without having obtained the green light from the health authorities. The disciplinary chamber, however, considered that he had not done so”take unjustified risk“to the patients to whom he prescribed hydroxychloroquine because he”knowingly excluded from treatment those with the highest risk factors“.

Didier Raoult was also sanctioned for “non-confraternity“and to have”harmed by remarks devoid of weighting of the measures taken by the health authorities for the purposes of protecting public health“, by calling into question widespread vaccination against Covid-19.

These sanctions are, however, symbolic, Didier Raoult having left his position at the IHU in Marseille in 2022, which he had headed for 11 years. The microbiologist remains the subject of a judicial investigation for suspicion of clinical trials.wild“.
