Professor Didier Raoult, now retired, banned on appeal from practicing medicine for two years

In December 2021, the Order of Physicians had imposed a simple reprimand at first instance to the former boss of the IHU Méditerranée Infection in Marseille for having praised hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for Covid-19 “without established scientific data”according to the medical ethics council.

The appeal hearing took place last June in the presence of the doctor and his lawyer, Fabrice Di Vizio. Professor Raoult was banned from practicing medicine for two years from next February 1, but this increased sentence is symbolic since, now retiredthe infectious disease specialist no longer has any function within the IHU.

He is retired since summer 2021 from his position as university professor-hospital practitioner and was replaced a year later at the head of the IHU by Pierre-Édouard Fournier.

If the Order of Physicians condemns the promotion of hydroxychloroquine by the Marseille biologist while the scientific community did not recommend this treatment, due to lack of solid data, the institution considers that Didier Raoult did not do so.take unjustified risk” to patients to whom he has prescribed it, as part of a clinical study described as “wild” carried out on around 30,000 patients without the green light from the health authorities.
