Covid is indeed back: “We are halfway to last winter’s record peak,” says a virologist

Who said Covid was completely behind us? Although it is no longer as lethal as it was a few years ago, Covid-19 is now a disease to live with. Every year it seems to come back in some way.

Indeed, since September, Sciensano has noted a notable increase in covid-19 particles in wastewater. A visible increase but which for the moment does not lead to additional pressure on hospitals. “We are halfway to last winter’s record peak. We may be heading in that direction, but the numbers could just as easily drop again in the next measurement“, explained Steven Van Gucht, virologist, in the columns of Nieuwsblad.

The virologist thus estimates that the majority of infections remain mild, the current situation therefore remains far from the peak of last winter.

This resurgence would be due to the KP.3 sub-variant, resulting from JN.1, itself derived from the Omicron variant which circulated a few months ago.
