In 2022, the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence had 167,179 inhabitants, an average increase of 0.5 % per year between 2016 and 2022.
This progression, mainly driven by net migration (+ 0,8 %), contrasts with a negative natural balance (- 0,4 %), a consequence of a general aging of the population.
Manosque and Gréoux-les-Bains at the top of growth
Among the municipalities of the department, some stand out for their attractiveness. Manosquethe most populous city with 22,807 inhabitants, retains its position as a demographic locomotive. However, it is Gréoux-les-Bains which shows the strongest growth (+ 2,8 % per year), confirming its status as a popular destination for its thermal baths and its peaceful living environment.
Villeneuve follows with a notable increase of 1.0 % per year, attracting new residents thanks to its proximity to strategic axes and quality infrastructure.

Other localities, on the other hand, are seeing their population decrease. Barcelonnettecapital of the Ubaye valley, loses 0.5% of its inhabitants each year. Peyruis also suffers a decline of 0.4% per year.
Intercommunalities, drivers of development
On the intermunicipal side, the Durance-Luberon-Verdon agglomeration community (63,654 inhabitants) is doing well with an annual increase of 0.6 %, followed closely by the Community of communes Haute-Provence-Pays de Banon (+ 0,6 %). The Community of communes Ubaye Valley-Serre-Ponçon undergoes a decrease of 0.4 % per year.
