– Eight children were taken to hospital.

This Thursday, June 9, nine students kindergarten and three adults (communal after-school workers) fell ill in Fère-Champenoise, in the Marne. They felt the same symptoms than those of children poisoned for three weeks now, according to information from L’Union, namely itching, headaches and nausea. But for the first time since the beginning of this series of poisoningsit is kindergarten students who are affected.

These discomforts occurred outdoors, near the gymnasium of this town which has 2,170 inhabitants. “The children were in front of the gymnasium and the playground, they did a little run, then rested. But when they left, they felt bad”, confides Mayor Gérard Gorisse. The latter went to the Yvette-Vignon association house where a minimum level of care is organized after the nursery school closes. Eight children were then transported to the pediatric department of the Châlons-en-Champagne hospital, including some were on oxygen.

Several children present high carbon monoxide levels in the blood, even though this cause had been ruled out as a cause of symptoms during the first analyzes. “We will have to put in the resources,” says Mayor Gérard Gorisse. “I am going this evening (Thursday) to the prefecture and telling them: “I want us to analyze the groundwater.” We must find a solution ! We can’t stay like this.”continues the councilor. A meeting was also planned Thursday to take stock of the situation.

“I think we have a hydraulic problem in Fère-Champenoise. Last night at 5 o’clock there was again heavy precipitation. Maybe something is happening that I can’t explain.”deplores Gérard Gorisse. “Already on the first day of the poisonings, Thursday May 30, there was rain, rain and rain. There’s something bothering me. That would still mean that there is a chemical effect in the soil which is waking up”, he adds. According to the Marne prefecture, no avenue is favored at the moment. Acetylene is, in fact, not the cause of children’s discomfort.
