Flu vaccine: what is covered by Social Security?

Social security coverage for the flu vaccine varies depending on whether you are considered a priority person or not.

Priority person

If you are one of the priority people mentioned in the previous part, you benefit in principle from100% coverage by Health Insurance for the flu vaccine. The vaccine is given to you in the pharmacy upon simple presentation of the voucher sent by Health Insurance and your Vitale card (except in certain cases requiring the presentation of a prior medical prescription: child under 11 years old, etc.) .

Several situations can arise:

You are over 11 years old and you are eligible for vaccination

All people aged 11 and over eligible for flu vaccination benefit from a simplified procedure: they receive a care voucher at home. They can collect their vaccine directly from the pharmacist, upon presentation of this voucher and their Vitale card, and be vaccinated by the professional of their choice: doctor, midwife, nurse or pharmacist.

If you are an employee and vaccination is recommended for your professional activity, vaccination is organized by your employer.

You are under 11 years old

People under 11 years of age must have a prior medical prescription to collect their vaccine from the pharmacy and to be vaccinated by a nurse. This prescription is written directly by the doctor or midwife on the care voucher sent by Health Insurance or printed by the healthcare professional.
Vaccination of children under 11 can be carried out by: a doctor, a midwife and a nurse (on medical prescription). It cannot be carried out by a pharmacist.

Children aged 6 months to 17 years with a chronic illness

Children aged 6 months to 17 years suffering from chronic illnesses are at risk of developing a serious form of the flu. They receive a health insurance voucher. Their vaccine is 100% covered by Social Security.

Children aged 2 to 17 without chronic illness

Children aged 2 to 17 years old who do not suffer from chronic illnesses (without comorbidities) can be offered vaccination by the healthcare professional who follows them. The vaccine is 65% covered by Health Insurance.

They do not receive a health insurance voucher. The professional who offers them vaccination prints a specific care voucher. The patient collects the vaccine in the pharmacy upon presentation of this voucher and the Vitale card.

Non-priority people

If you are one of the people considered non-priorityyou can also get vaccinated by picking up your vaccine in a pharmacy, without a medical prescription. On the other hand, the Flu vaccine is not fully covered by Health Insurance.

In this context, reimbursement for the flu vaccine injection is the same as for a usual consultation with a GP, i.e. 70% of the basic Social Security rate. If the vaccine is carried out by a midwife or pharmacist, reimbursement will also be 70%. On the other hand, if it is carried out by a nurse, the reimbursement will be 60%.

The influenza vaccine injection is covered at 100% of the basic Social Security rate if you have a long-term illness (ALD).

Which professional can vaccinate you against the flu?

Healthcare professionals authorized to vaccinate against influenza are :

  • Doctors;
  • Nurses;
  • Pharmacists;
  • Midwives.

I have not received my flu vaccine voucher: what should I do?

Vaccination is recommended but you have not received a flu vaccine voucher or did you lose it?

In this case, your doctor, pharmacist, nurse or midwife can give you a voucher allowing you to obtain the vaccine free of charge.

You haven’t received it? This is particularly the case for pregnant women, people suffering from severe obesity or those around a fragile infant or immunocompromised people.

Healthcare professionals cannot provide care vouchers to people who are not eligible for vaccination.

Combining flu vaccination and covid-19 vaccination: it’s possible!

If you are concerned by both the flu vaccination and the Covid-19 vaccination, it is possible to carry out both vaccinations on the same day!
In fact, there is no delay to be observed between vaccination against influenza and vaccination against Covid-19.

In detail, if you get the flu vaccination at the same time as the Covid-19 vaccination, you must always bring your flu vaccine to the professional who is vaccinating you. The flu vaccine is only available in pharmacies. The Covid-19 vaccine is available from the healthcare professional who vaccinates you.
