Deepfake and fake media, Kamala Harris targeted by a disinformation operation

As the election campaign rages in the United States, Kamala Harris is the target of a vast disinformation operation at the beginning of September. A mysterious website claims that the Democratic presidential candidate seriously injured a 13-year-old girl in a car accident in 2011, before fleeing. This rumor is based in particular on a false testimony and distorted images. A particularly sophisticated fake news story, which has gone viral on social networks.

This false rumor first appeared online on an obscure website called KBSF San Francisco News. This site, previously unknown, presents itself as an online media. On September 2, 2024, we find an article there entitled ” Kamala Harris knocked down a 13-year-old girl with his car before leaving the scene ».

The author, whose identity is unknown, claims that in June 2011, ” Kamala Harris was driving a car when she hit two pedestrians and left the scene of the incident in San Francisco. One of the victims, Alisha Brown, decided to go public with her story. She says that after the accident, people close to Harris threatened her mother to not report the incident to the police. It was only after her mother died 13 years later that Alisha decided to tell her story. ».

This article was quickly picked up by popular accounts on social networks. On X alone (ex-Twitter), the fake news exceeded 6 million views as of September 4, 2024.
