Donald Trump pleads not guilty again

Donald Trump will again plead not guilty in federal charges of unlawfully attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election, according to a document filed Tuesday, September 3 by the former US president’s lawyers.

The Republican presidential candidate in November, who declined to appear at the hearing on Thursday before federal judge Tanya Chutkan, who is in charge of the case, has therefore instructed his lawyers to officially declare that he is pleading not guilty.

He had already pleaded not guilty in August 2023 following the initial indictment released by special prosecutor Jack Smith.

A hearing this Thursday

But on August 27, the latter published a revised indictment, in order to take into account the unprecedented decision of the Supreme Court of July 1 recognizing broad criminal immunity for the president of the United States, which nevertheless takes up the same serious charges.

Donald Trump therefore remains charged with “conspiracy against American institutions” and “violating the right to vote” of voters for his pressure on local authorities in several key states in order to invalidate the official results of the election won by Democrat Joe Biden.

The discussions this Thursday will focus on the proposals of the two parties on the continuation of the procedure, particularly in terms of timetable.

Unsurprisingly, the defense last week proposed a timetable for considering pretrial motions that extends well beyond Election Day and even the January 2025 transfer of power.

For his part, the special counsel did not mention a date, deferring to the judge’s decision. Jack Smith said he was ready to present his written arguments on the question of criminal immunity invoked by Donald Trump as a former president “at any time the court deems appropriate.”
