Car hits group of children, driver arrested

A motorist knocked down a group of children and an accompanying person on Tuesday, September 3 in Vercel-Villedieu-le-Camp in Doubs, BFMTV learned from concordant sources.

According to the Besançon prosecutor, three people were hospitalized: a 4-year-old boy with a slight cranial hematoma, a 5-year-old girl with a broken nose and the 58-year-old after-school chaperone with bruises on her legs. All were released from the hospital late in the afternoon.

The driver in custody

The incident took place around noon on Tuesday as the group was heading to the canteen. A vehicle travelling at low speed then mounted the sidewalk and hit the group, according to concordant sources.

The 70-year-old driver was arrested by the police and was found to be heavily intoxicated. He was then taken into custody. His blood alcohol level will be measured when his condition allows.

A 29-year-old witness to the scene immediately after the accident took the keys from the driver who looked haggard. “But talking about a hit-and-run seems premature,” explained a source close to the investigation.
