Clashes between striking police and angry Ajax fans

AMSTERDAM – Ajax Amsterdam fans are protesting the postponement of three matches due to a police strike against a reform of their pension system.

Ajax fans in the Netherlands are angry. Supporters of the club, unhappy about the postponements of matches due to a strike by the Dutch police, clashed with police on Sunday in Amsterdam.

Fans grabbed bicycles and barriers and lit smoke bombs as they marched towards the capital’s police headquarters before security forces intervened, local media reported.

Charges to disperse protesters

“The situation is agitated at the Amsterdam police headquarters. Ajax supporters are vandalizing the building and police vehicles,” the Amsterdam police explained on X. They added that “despite numerous warnings, a group continues to seek confrontation. The mobile force unit is now carrying out charges to disperse them.”

Ajax fans are protesting the postponement of three matches due to a police strike against a reform of their pension system, including the match scheduled for Sunday against Utrecht for the fifth day of the Championship. The authorities had already ruled that the “Klassieker” between Ajax and Feyenoord, a high-risk match scheduled for September 1 in Rotterdam, could not be played (…) - 20minutes
