UN fears ethnic targeting of populations in certain provinces

In Sudan, civilians are the main victims of the war raging between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The UN also fears that this war could take on an ethnic dimension in some provinces.

Mona Rishmawi, Head of the Rule of Law, Equality and Non-Discrimination Division at the Office of the High Commissioner for United Nations human rights activist denounces ethnic targeting of Masalit communities in Darfur.

« What happenedshe said to Welly Diallo, in the area around El-Geneina, which is normally a multi-ethnic city, is that when the Rapid Support Forces took control, they went after the Masalit community in their homes, they targeted them, house by house, neighborhood by neighborhood in a very systematic way; they chased them out of El-Geneina and eventually out of the Darfur to Chad. »

« Crime of persecution »

« And that is why in our report we explain that what is happening is a crime of persecution committed by the FSR because it is clear that there is a desire for ethnic targeting; which is not the case throughout the country. Sudanbut unfortunately in Darfur there is ethnic targeting in the civilian population, the Masalites but also the other communities are angry and blame the government for not making any attempt to protect them », conclut Mona Rishmawi.
