Russia says woman killed in Ukrainian strike in Moscow region

Russia announced on Tuesday the death of a woman following a Ukrainian strike in the Moscow region, and that it had shot down 144 drones during the night.

“A 46-year-old woman died” after a drone hit a residential building in Ramenskoye on the southeastern outskirts of the capital, Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobiov said on the Telegram messenger.

However, the governor said that the death of a 9-year-old child was “not confirmed”, although he had previously reported it. He also said that “three people (had) been injured” and that they had been transferred to a hospital.

On Monday night, Russian air defense systems shot down a total of 144 Ukrainian drones, including 20 over the Moscow region, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Telegram.

Due to the attack, flights at several Moscow airports were disrupted, according to their websites. Air traffic at Kazan International Airport, west of Moscow, was also disrupted, according to the Ria Novosti news agency.

“72 drones (were intercepted) over the Bryansk region (…) 14 over the Kursk region, 13 over the Tula region, eight over the Belgorod region, seven over the Kaluga region, five over the Voronezh region, four over the Lipetsk region and one over the Orel region,” the Russian Defense Ministry detailed.

Russia announces almost daily that it has destroyed Ukrainian drones launched against its territory, but it is rare that they manage to hit the Moscow region.

– Capture of a Ukrainian village –

The day before this Ukrainian attack, the Russian army had claimed the capture of a new village in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, near the strategic town of Pokrovsk towards which its troops have advanced rapidly in recent weeks.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement that its troops had captured the village of Memryk, about 20 kilometers from Pokrovsk and less than 5 kilometers from the town of Selydove.

On Sunday, the Russian army had already declared that it had taken control of another town in the area, Novogrodivka.

Pokrovsk, an important logistical hub for the Ukrainian army, has been the target for several weeks of Russian troops superior in terms of both men and weapons.

Despite a surprise cross-border attack launched by kyiv on August 6 in the Kursk region, Moscow continues to steadily gain ground in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk, which remains the epicenter of the fighting.

For its part, kyiv claimed responsibility on Saturday for a strike on a Russian munitions depot which caused a fire in the border region of Voronezh.
