An armed attack took place on the morning of September 5 in downtown Munich, near the Israeli Consulate General. Information about the attacker, who was shot dead by the police and did not have time to cause any casualties, remains very limited for the moment. But the symbolism of the place raises questions.

The identity and motives of the attacker killed by police in central Munich are still unknown, writes our correspondent in Berlin., Pascal Thibaut. But the location and date are questionable. The man opened fire near the Israeli Consulate General, close to a documentation center on Nazism. An attack that also comes on the anniversary of the hostage-taking and assassination by the Palestinian organization “Black September” of eleven Israeli athletes during the 1972 Munich Olympics.

« This is probably an attack on the Israeli institution “We are very sorry,” Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told reporters about the man who was shot dead by police after firing several shots, and who police simply said was an 18-year-old Austrian.

Tense situation

The Israeli Consulate General in Munich was closed this morning due to a commemoration ceremony for the 1972 tragedy. The event was cancelled after news of the attack in downtown Munich broke.
