Fifty days after the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, the appointment of his successor has been postponed again. Emmanuel Macron, who seemed ready to appoint Xavier Bertrand on Wednesday, has backtracked and is exploring other options, including that of the former right-wing European Commissioner Michel Barnier.

Ministerial crisis, day 60. Emmanuel Macron still has to announce the name of the next Prime Minister, a puzzle that the president once again failed to solve on Wednesday, September 4, with the Michel Barnier lead now succeeding, on the right, that of Xavier Bertrand.

Contrary to what was still expected at the beginning of the afternoon, the Élysée decided not to make an announcement on Wednesday evening, almost two months after the second round of the legislative elections.

“We are moving forward. The president’s criteria remain the ‘non-censorability'” by the Assembly of the future tenant of Matignon “and the capacity to form coalitions,” a close friend of the president explained to AFP.

A “methodical error” and a “fundamental problem”, his predecessor François Hollande said on TMC on Wednesday evening.

“Bertrand is most likely 100% dead,” notes a ministerial adviser, “because he would never have had a majority on any text.”
