Three people were arrested on Sunday as part of a criminal investigation for “premeditated voluntary homicide” following the death of a motorist who was beaten up on Saturday evening in Valencia, the city’s prosecutor said.

The events took place around 10 p.m. on Saturday, on Avenue de la Libération in Valence, when a car was violently hit several times by another vehicle and crashed into a low wall, prosecutor Laurent de Caigny said in a brief statement.

Two people got out of the other car and pulled the driver, who was “clearly injured”, out of the car they had just hit, and kicked him “several times in the head”, before fleeing, he said.

The police, called by witnesses, chased the attackers’ vehicle but lost track of it. It was found burned out in the town of Claveyson, located around thirty kilometres north of Valence.

The attacked driver died on the scene despite the intervention of emergency services, it was stated.

“Thanks to the use of the initial elements collected and urban video surveillance recordings”, three people were arrested and placed in police custody, the prosecutor said without giving further details, particularly on the identity of the victim.

“Investigations are continuing, in particular to determine the motive for this atrocious fatal attack, the course of which suggests a targeted killing,” Mr de Caigny added.
