Previously, passengers were required to be able to “carry all of their luggage themselves and at once”. But the railway group decided last February to “clarify the existing rule”.

From now on, each customer will be able to travel with two bags or suitcases measuring 70 cm x 90 cm x 50 cm maximum and a smaller bag measuring 30 cm x 40 cm x 15 cm.

Special baggage such as strollers, scooters, surfboards, snowboards or musical instruments are also accepted, but count as a large bag.

Any offender is liable to a fine of 50 euros “per non-compliant or excess baggage”, specifies the SNCF. The fine can rise to 150 euros “if the baggage is inconvenient or dangerous”.

“Our customers, but also our agents, may find themselves confronted with either safety problems on board (falling suitcases), or traffic difficulties, or a lack of space,” SNCF says to justify this measure.

The railway company is also faced with the growing success of the train, with increasingly full and therefore saturated carriages, particularly during periods of major holiday departures.

The baggage restrictions previously only affected TGV Ouigo, low-cost trains with no bar car and non-refundable tickets only.
