The Democratic presidential candidate reportedly said that young Americans are too stupid to understand inflation. At least that’s what we believe we hear in a video shared on X by the accounts of Elon Musk and the pro-Trump political action committee Rights for America. In reality, this sentence, taken from a 2014 speech by Kamala Harris, was taken out of context.
In a video titled “Kamala Harris Thinks You’re Too Stupid,” the pro-Trump site Learn About Kamala, dedicated to sharing videos aimed at discrediting Kamala Harris’ record on the topics of immigration, insecurity and purchasing power, claims, with video support, that Kamala Harris has deemed young Americans “too stupid” to understand inflation.
In the first few seconds of the video, a voiceover says, “Young Americans, Kamala Harris thinks you’re too stupid to realize she’s responsible for our record inflation.” This is followed by an archival clip in which Harris says, “What else do we know about this population? They’re stupid.” The voiceover goes on to list goods and services that have suffered inflation (food, housing, electricity, healthcare, etc.).
The montage that is circulating widely therefore does not take into account the context in which the sentence was uttered: a discussion on a youth program aimed at reducing recidivism through education.
