Many of the first cities in History have since disappeared. Which ones have been able to resist the passage of time to the point of still being inhabited and active today?
Answering the question of the oldest city in the known world is not so simple, because we must first know how to define the age of a city. Many ancient cities were born from groupings of scattered camps. Should we date the birth of the city to the presence of these camps? To the time when the population became large enough to call it a city? To the date of the oldest remains or the oldest mentions found in writing? Archaeological excavations and travelers’ accounts (these have multiplied considerably since the Middle Ages) are the main sources of knowledge, without it being possible to confirm with certainty the date of birth of a city.
