On September 23, 2023, Hereditary Princess Hande of Mecklenburg-Strelitz gave birth to her first child. The former grand ducal house announced the paternity of hereditary prince Georg Alexander, eldest son of Duke Borwin and Duchess Alice of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Hereditary couple from Mecklenburg welcomes their first child
The Grand Ducal House of Mecklenburg announced that the hereditary couple of Mecklenburg-Strelitz had just expanded on September 23, 2023, by welcoming their first child. Duchess Hande gave birth this Saturday in the early hours of the morning, exactly at 5:41 a.m. “Parents and child are happy, tired but doing well”indicates the press release from the Grand Ducal House.

A baby one year after the big wedding in Neustrelitz
The child, a little boy whose first name has not been revealed, was born in Rotterdam. The first names will be revealed within a few days, the press release specifies. The eldest son of Duke Borwin and Duchess Alice of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was civilly married to Hande Macit on June 17, 2022 at Mirow Castle. Hereditary Prince Georg Alexander, simply known as Alexander, 32, is the first son of the pretender to the throne of the former Grand Duchies of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The religious wedding was celebrated on September 17, 2022 in Neustrelitz, where his ancestors reigned for centuries.

Hande Macit attended business school in Rotterdam before founding Luwia Yoghurt, an organic and sustainable yogurt brand. Hereditary Prince Alexander left his native Baden-Württemberg to pursue his secondary education in Ireland. He obtained a diploma in environmental management in 2018. After working in forestry in Ireland, he recently returned to work in Germany, still in the same sector.

Officially, the grand ducal house of Mecklenburg-Schwerin lost its direct line leader with the death of Frederick Francis V in 2001, who died without male descendants. It is therefore Borwin, head of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz family who today assumes the role of head of the two Mecklenburg families.
In 1918, shortly before the fall of the German Empire and the abolition of the monarchy in all sovereign states, Adolf Frederick VI, last Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz ended his life. His cousin, Frederick Francis IV, the last Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, assumed the regency of Strelitz until the abolition of the monarchy a few months later.
