Billy Sheehan talks about Eddie Van Halen’s impact on his career

Billy Sheehan, known for his work with David Lee Roth and renowned guitarists, shared a touching anecdote about his relationship with Eddie Van Halen. In a recent interview with Marty5150Sheehan reflected on the influence Eddie had on his life and career, even at a time when he was still an “unknown”.

Eddie Van Halen, a mentor above all

During the interview, Sheehan recalled his early days with Talas, when they opened for Van Halen in 1980. He was impacted by the way Eddie supported him: “When we lost him, it was difficult for a lot of people. It was difficult for me, because he was always this light, this spark… He would answer my phone calls when I was still a nobody in Buffalo.”

He continues: “I would call him, and he would stay with me on the phone, supporting me and encouraging me. He played a huge role in my desire to continue to move forward in my life and career. He was a really great guy.”

The notable guitarists of Billy Sheehan’s career

During the same interview, Sheehan was asked to compare several guitarists he has collaborated with, including Steve Vai, Richie Kotzen and Paul Gilbert. Rather than finding similarities between them, Sheehan emphasized their uniqueness: “Richie is a brilliant guitarist and an incredible singer. Steve is a genius and an innovator. Paul is a tireless tracker of exceptional music. And there’s also Tony MacAlpine and Greg Howe…”

He adds: “What makes them individual is precisely that they don’t have much in common. They each carved their own path, crossing the jungle with their machetes to find what they were looking for.”
