As always, attention is focused on the names of stars – actresses and singers – but this latest promotion of the Legion of Honor stands out from the others by highlighting the real stars of 2024: a hundred craftsmen of Notre-Dame de Paris. Among the names of 1,702 civilian winners of the Legion of Honor and the Order of Merit on January 1, published on Saturday in the Official Journal, the Grand Chancellery unveiled “a special promotion rewarding these national distinctions to 101 people who have worked for the reconstruction of Notre-Dame de Paris.
Their boss Philippe Jost, at the head of the public establishment responsible for the restoration project of the cathedral, devastated by a fire in 2019, is distinguished “commander” within the Legion of Honor. This senior official succeeded General Jean-Louis Georgelin, who died in 2023 and himself a Grand Cross, the highest grade of the award founded by Napoleon Bonaparte. At his side, 100 knights: 33 Legion of Honor, 67 National Order of Merit, including 59 contractors and craftsmen and 14 works supervisors and operations directors.
