Robbie Williams has confirmed he refused to sing at the coronation of King Charles III.

A major concert was organized to commemorate the British monarch’s accession to the throne in May 2023. Paloma Faith, Olly Murs, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie were among the stars who performed on the occasion. But the interpreter of Angel was not at the party, broadcast on television and which brought together 12.3 million people in the United Kingdom alone.

During his appearance on Watch What Happens Live this week, Robbie Williams explained his absence, which had nothing to do with politics. “I was working. I had a commitment that I couldn’t refuse because of the money,” the 50-year-old singer responded frankly.

While the public believes that artists are paid to perform at the royal event in front of the cameras that broadcast the spectacle to viewers around the world, rumors had suggested that stars like Katy Perry and Lionel Richie performed for free. Following the lavish ceremony, it was even rumored that the celebrities attending the event had paid their own way to get there, with the resulting media coverage benefiting them in any case.

Although Robbie Williams did not participate in the 2023 ceremony, he opened the 2012 Diamond Jubilee concert in honor of Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, organized by Gary Barlow, his bandmate. Take That.
