While he was a guest on the show As an aside on Canal+ in February 2024, Daniel Prévost looked back on the notable roles of his career and obviously spoke about the character of Lucien Cheval which he performs in The Cons Dinner.
He first mentioned the play, from which the film is adaptedas well as author and director Francis Veber. « I didn’t know this gentleman. I didn’t know the piece and it had already been five years, I think, that it had been performed in Paris. One day I received a phone call” remembers Daniel Prévost.
“He was very particular about his dialogue”
Although performed by Gerard Hernandez in the play, the role of Lucien Cheval was given to Daniel Prévost in the film The Cons Dinner. “He sent me the script, I found it amazing”continues the actor.
Subsequently, the actor admits that he only has good memories of the experience of filming with Francis Veber. « He was very particular about his dialogues. He said to me, ‘Can you go a little further on this or that phrase?’ and I said, ‘Yes, you can ask me, I have everything in store’. I did everything he wanted. It’s not complicated at all. I am a person of dialogue, there is no problem for me, you just have to speak to me kindly”explains Daniel Prévost.

Because, if the interpreter of Lucien Cheval had no problem with the director’s working method, the same cannot be said of Thierry Lhermitte who had a bad experience with this filming. For good reason, he even ended up in tears…
In any case, the success of Cons Dinner was both commercial and critical since, in 1999, the feature film was awarded three prizes at the César ceremony : best actor for Jacques Villeret, best actor in a supporting role for Daniel Prévost as well as best original screenplay or adaptation for Francis Veber.
