This British actor will play Vladimir Putin in Olivier Assayas’ new film

In an interview with Deadline, Jude Law, proud father of seven children, has just confirmed that he will play Vladimir Putin in “Le Mage du Kremlin“, highly anticipated adaptation of Giuliano da Empoli’s best-seller by Olivier Assayas.

A dizzying role that intimidates the star of “The Holiday”

“I hesitate to say it because I haven’t really started working on it yet. Right now, it feels like an Everest to climb, and I’m at the base of the mountain wondering : ‘Oh my God, why did I accept?’”, says Jude Law. The actor, who has just come out of his role as Henry VIII in “The Queen’s Gambit”, will this time play one of the most controversial political figures of our time.

An ambitious adaptation for Olivier Assayas

The film is based on the successful novel by Giuliano da Empoli, crowned with the Grand Prix de l’Académie française in 2022. The screenplay, co-written by Olivier Assayas and Emmanuel Carrère, immerses us in Russia in the 1990s, in aftermath of the collapse of the USSR. To carry this political fresco, an exceptional cast was brought together around Jude Law: Alicia Vikander, Paul Dano in the role of Vadim Baranov, Zach Galifianakis, Jeffrey Wright and Tom Sturridge.

“The Mage of the Kremlin”, a political thriller between fiction and reality

“Beyond the passions of men who navigate the dangerous flows of modern politics, we see the powerful cinematographic movement of History in the making”explains Olivier Assayas to Variety.

The film promises to explore the backstage of Russian power through the journey of Vadim Baranov, a young television producer who became an image advisor to Vladimir Putin. The story incorporates many historical events, from the Second Chechen War to the Revolution of 2004, including the 2000 Russian presidential election.

Filming has not yet started and the film is not expected to see the light of day before 2026, giving Jude Law time to prepare for this transformation which promises to be one of the most significant of his career.
