After years of tension, the British royal family on Sunday extended their best birthday wishes to Prince Harry, who is celebrating his 40th birthday. A first since 2021.
The first message was posted early Sunday on the royal family’s official account. “Wishing the Duke of Sussex a very happy birthday,” the social media post read. It was followed by another, equally terse, message posted on the social media of Prince William and his wife, Princess Kate.

The last message was in 2021
According to British media, the last such message dates back to 2021. The year in which Prince Harry and his wife Meghan claimed in a sensational interview with the American media guru Oprah Winfrey that a member of the royal family had wondered, when Meghan was pregnant, about the skin color their son Archie would have.
The final blow came in early 2023 with the publication of Spare (The Substitute), the prince’s uncompromising and unfiltered autobiography, very critical of the royal family.

As a sign of these tensions, the last public appearance between Prince Harry and his brother William dates back to September 2022, for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. He had seen his father, Charles III, very briefly last February when he announced his cancer.
“I was anxious at 30, I’m excited at 40,” the prince said in a statement to the BBC on Friday, without mentioning his family. Prince Harry celebrates his birthday on Sunday in California with his two children and wife Meghan. The couple have been living there since 2020.
