Her story begins like a romantic scene from the 1950s. The eldest of many siblings, she very early on had to take on heavy responsibilities to support her family.
In this difficult reality, however, a moment would change her life: when she chose the job of a washerwoman, attracted by the possibility of taking a radio near “her washed rock”.
It was there, in the privacy of the family backyard, that his warm, clear voice resonated for the first time, capturing the attention of a passerby. But not just any collector: a paying debt collector, also conductor of the Rhythmic Club.
Fascinated by her raw talent, he convinces her parents to let her join his group. A star was born.
Under the leadership of Jules Arlanda, an emblematic figure of Reunion music, she learned about Sega in Creole. In the 1970s, she formed the legendary trio “Bourbon i koz, Bourbon i chant” with Henry Claude and Marie-Armande Moutou.
Together, they sing vibrant chronicles of Reunion society, pieces that have become timeless like Rend zanno la Lisa or When li met son molding.
Congratulations to Pierrette Payet, Guardian of Memory 2024, for her dedication to a world that is fairer, more human and more rooted in our traditions.
