Golden Globes: the race for the Oscars is taking shape… and Denis Villeneuve’s chances are diminishing

The awards season is well and truly underway in Hollywood and the Golden Globes winners, revealed Sunday evening, allow us to see a little more clearly in the race for the Oscars. While two big favorites are emerging, the chances of seeing Denis Villeneuve walk away with a prize seem to be diminishing visibly…

Thanks to their respective triumphs at the Golden Globes, the films The Brutalist by Brady Corbet and Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard are now big favorites for the Oscars.

We can also write without being mistaken that The brutalist, a 3.5 hour long film already described as a masterpiece by the American press, holds a head start over all the other contenders after winning on Sunday evening three of the most prestigious prizes of the ceremony, those for best film drama, best direction and best actor (Adrien Brody).

Even though it was overshadowed by the two big winners of the evening, the thriller Conclave by Edward Berger managed to stay in the race by winning the prize for best screenplay. Same for the musical Wicked, who walked away with the award for best box office performance, and for the thriller La substancewhich won Demi Moore the first major award of her acting career.

And Villeneuve?

These results are not good news for Denis Villeneuve and his Dune: Part Two. The Quebec filmmaker’s Oscar race had already suffered a hard blow when the Golden Globes nominations were revealed last month when the second chapter of his sci-fi sage only received two nominations and was ignored in the category. for the best achievement.

Since this announcement, Villeneuve has also been excluded from the list of favorites in most expert predictions for the Oscar for best director.

According to these experts, the second chapter of Dune should still land nominations in several categories at the Oscars, including that of best film, which can, remember, retain up to ten finalists. Denis Villeneuve’s feature film should also stand out in most technical categories (best visual effects, photo direction, artistic direction, etc.), if we rely on the predictions published in the specialized Hollywood press.

Even though the race for the Oscars is well underway, several other important awards ceremonies will take place over the next few weeks in Hollywood and could change the table of favorites. Let’s hope that the tide turns in favor of Denis Villeneuve…

The 96e The Oscars ceremony will take place on March 2 in Hollywood. Nominations will be revealed on January 17.
