In an interview with US magazine Playboy, Denzel Washington revealed the role he regretted turning down in the 1990s.

However, an acting career is very often a question of schedule and it is not uncommon to see some of them miss out on roles that could have enriched their filmography. This is the case of Denzel Washington who revealed the biggest regret of his career.
With the media Playboy, the actor notably revealed the film in which he could have appeared and which was a huge success at the cinema, without him. It's 1995 and David Fincher releases what is considered one of the best crime films of all time. It's nothing less than Seven which starred Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey.
Today, it's impossible to imagine the role of Inspector David Mills without Brad Pitt. However, this iconic character of the seventh art could have been played by Denzel Washington:
“Seven was offered to me a few years ago. I said no. Brad Pitt ended up playing the role. Go figure! On this one, I messed up. I messed up. These are things that happen”
A film too dark for Denzel Washington?
Denzel Washington explains his refusal with two understandable arguments. Indeed, he confided that he was not convinced by David Fincher's work on the film Alien 3, which had received a mixed reception. The second explanation comes from the script, which Denzel Washington found too dark compared to the projects he was accustomed to accepting.

It was when he saw the film Seven came out that the actor understood his error of judgment but recognized that Brad Pitt had been perfect in this role:
“When I read the script for Seven, I said to myself that it was too much. And then I saw the movie and I was like, 'My God.' But obviously this role wasn't for me, it was made for Brad.”
In the end, no one was a loser since Denzel Washington established himself as one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood while Seven, and its director, also left their mark on cinema history.
