In the following months, she took on a series of projects, riding on her recently acquired notoriety: creation of a dating site, her foundation for animals, and above all, her own cryptocurrency, Hawk. The latter is a memecoin, a cryptocurrency inspired by popular Internet memes, which often represents a very risky investment.
When it launched, it reached a market capitalization of around $490 million, but collapsed by over 96% in 15 minutes. Haliey Welch and her team reportedly pocketed $50 million before disappearing, leaving hundreds of members of her community alone facing the loss of almost their entire investment.
In her last online post, on December 6, Welch tried to explain that she hadn't scammed anyone, then “went to bed.” She remained dormant for two weeks, before reappearing on December 20, on X. In the meantime, several complaints were filed with the American stock market policeman.
