Even though it will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2026, We talk about you ranks 14th among the most listened to tracks by Quebec performers since the start of the year, according to a list relayed by the Institute of Statistics of Quebec.
In this ranking where we mainly find titles from Cowboys Fringants or Charlotte Cardin, We talk about you is the only song that dates from the 1990s.
However, unlike Running Up That Hillsa 1985 song by Kate Bush which rose to the top of the charts in 2022 after being broadcast in an episode of the series Stranger Thingsthe Noir Silence classic was recently unable to count on a major TV showcase to relaunch it.
New version
In the eyes of Noir Silence guitarist, Samuel Busque, We talk about you has always pleased the public, but it got a second wind when the group released a new and improved version two years ago.
“Radios started playing the song again and we saw a resurgence of Shazams. When you have 8,600 in a year, it’s because there are people who are asking questions,” mentions the musician.
He notes that the song is now better known than Noir Silence and that it reaches all age groups.
The effect is also felt on online listening platforms. From February to December 2024, We talk about you recorded nearly 5 million plays, only on Spotify, a remarkable result for a French-speaking song from Quebec.
“Timeless”
The Cogeco group stations are among the radio stations that regularly play We talk about you.
“We test the songs that people prefer and I’ve been testing for years We talk about you. Each time, it finds itself in the top 15 of the most popular songs, even among English-speaking titles,” says the musical director, Jean-Pascal Lemelin.
“It’s timeless,” he adds. People don’t get tired of it. There is something timeless about it. (…) The comparison is perhaps lame, but it makes me think of A musician among manyd’Harmonium.»
- We talk about you was admitted to SOCAN Classics in 2023.
- This fall, Noir Silence launched an updated French-language version of We Didn’t Start The Fire, Billy Joel.
