The last meeting between Whitney Cummings and Francis Ford Coppola was like an episode of “Punk’d: Stars Trapped.”
PEOPLE – An audition “humiliating”. Whitney Cummings will long remember her casting for Megalopolis. If she was not chosen to play in the film presented at the last Cannes Film Festival, the comedian spoke of the lunar audition to which director Francis Ford Coppola submitted her.
The American actress explains that she spent three days memorizing her lines as best as possible and several hours physically preparing for the casting so that nothing went as planned. “It was a real trauma for me,” she confides in an excerpt from the podcast Good For You, as you can see in the snippet below.
The actress says that as soon as she arrived, the atmosphere was not pleasant and that no one spoke. “It was so embarrassing”she specifies. Once in front of Francis Ford Coppola, the latter refused to let her play the planned scene and asked her to improvisations, each more absurd than the last.

During this hearing, for example, she had to say goodbye to her son who went to war using an English accent or even confront her unfaithful husband using an Australian accent.
Francis Ford Coppola also in full improvisation
The actress, who began to become known thanks to her participation in the show Punk’d: Stars trapped on MTV, thinks he’s the center of a prank. “I started to ignore him, then he said, ‘That was great’”she continues. She confides that she “completely dissociated” of herself, continuing to improvise “ like crazy » with the director who gave him the answer.
At the end, Francis Ford Coppola was happy to give him a bottle of his wine and a signed copy of his new book. “As if I had come to an autograph session! »she quips.
If Whitney Cummings doesn’t appear in the cast of Megalopolis, perhaps it’s better for her. The film, released on September 25 in France, was a critical and commercial failure which only grossed $13 million at the worldwide box office for a budget estimated at $120 million. Despite a five-star cast – made up of Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf and Laurence Fishburne, among others – the feature film also left without an award from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.
