CContrary to popular belief, love does not last three years, but much longer. Even when defeated, it can remain alive in you for life and catch up with you by surprise. This is the theme of Philippe Labro's new novel, Two Gimlets on the 5e Avenue, one of the joys of reading this end of year.
First of all, a word about this title. A traditional cocktail served to his clients by Philip Marlowe, Raymond Chandler's detective, the gimlet is made up of half gin and half lime, to which is sometimes added a hint of sugar. Already the title says everything about the modesty, the lightness of Philippe Labro's novel, which can be read in one gulp.
It's at the end of the book that the gimlets arrive, when the two heroes, Lucas and Élisabeth, meet at the Sherry Netherland lounge bar in New York, and seem ready to do it again (“And if We tried? We are happy for them. The epilogue, which we will not spoil any further, remains open, like this novel, where Philippe Labro leaves his usual autobiographical vein.
