Audrey Tautou's big comeback at 48, after 7 years away from the life of an ex-star: “I always looked down”

In and even elsewhere, it is impossible not to know Audrey Tautou. The actress made her breakthrough at the age of 25 and not in just any film. Jean-Pierre Jeunet chose her to play his heroine in The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain in 2001. A role which will not have been without consequences as the feature film was so popular in France and in the four corners of the world. Audrey Tautou hadn't really thought about success at the time. And this, despite the warnings of her playmates who assured her that she would be propelled to star status upon release: “Everyone alerted me to what was likely to happen: Jean-Pierre (Jeunet), Mathieu Kassovitz, Jamel… For me, it was totally abstract. Before, I had done Venus Beauty (Institute) which had been very successful, and I had won the César… But with Amélieit was very sudden and very important” confides Audrey Tautou to Parisian this Thursday, November 28.

Audrey Tautou didn't really expect to become a global star, but she didn't have a hard time experiencing it. She also made a photo book, Superfacialpublished this Friday, November 29 published by Fisheye. “I couldn't be anonymous anywhere. I went to Peru, Chile, Argentina, Russia, Canada, Japan or China, I was recognized everywhere” she admits. “As it was not something I had sought or hoped for – as strange as it may seem when you want to be an actress – I experienced this phenomenon with distance. That's why I documented what was happening to me with photos and texts.”

New lifestyle habits to stay discreet

Faced with requests, Audrey Tautou adopted automatisms to avoid being recognized. Among them, the fact of no longer looking in front of her so as not to meet someone's gaze: “When I walked down the street or entered a restaurant, I always looked down.. I have always had good contact with people but when you are observed, you have the feeling that a little of your privacy is being stolen from you..“This method, as effective as it is, even cost him a late diagnosis:”Since I never looked up, it took me years to realize that I needed glasses to see far away!

She wasn't “unhappy“however:”I found it uncomfortable but I still had a job that I loved, I met great people, great trips, extraordinary and unique experiences..“Despite her love of cinema, Audrey Tautou opted to withdraw for a while:”Besides my work as an actress, I have always had the desire to do many other things. I like taking photos, writing, drawing… […] My job as an actress took up so much of my time that I didn't have the space to develop my projects.

The latest one will therefore be available to the public from this Friday, November 29 and will allow fans of Audrey Tautou, who has become the mother of a little girl, to discover her talents hidden behind the lens: I received my first camera for my solemn communion in CM2. I was passionate about animals and the jungle, I fantasized about myself as Dian Fossey. Since then, I have always photographed what surrounded me during my travels and in everyday life. There, I wanted to publish this book because I had accumulated a lot of images and texts, which all made sense. When we make things, at some point we want to free ourselves from it, to lighten up..
