“People don’t know how this disease happens”

Maïwenn intervened on Interthis Sunday, November 24. The director is used to speaking out about her film projects and cinema. But this time, she spoke on a much more personal and serious subject: the death of her husband of a pancreatic cancer a few months earlier. Heartbreaking, his testimony also allowed him to raise public awareness about this disease.

Moreover, Maïwenn was not the only one to talk about pancreatic cancer on France Inter. The actress and director indeed intervened in the company of an oncologist, Professor Pascal Hammel. This specialist in digestive cancers took advantage of Maïwenn's intervention to dispel a certain number of preconceived ideas about the disease.

Maïwenn gives a moving testimony on the death of her husband from pancreatic cancer

Maïwenn’s intervention in 7:50 a.m. of France Interthis Sunday, November 24, was very memorable for listeners. “I lost my husband seven months ago to this illness”began by recalling actress and director. “I find that this disease has a bad reputation. I have noticed that people don’t really know how it can happen, and who it can affect”she added.

For Maïwenn, her testimony on France Inter was less an opportunity to discuss the drama she experienced a few months earlier with her husband than raising awareness about pancreatic cancer. “It is not true that it can only affect men from the age of 60. It can affect many very young people, men and women. It is a disease which, unfortunately, when we hurts, it may be too late”she explained.

Maïwenn wants to raise funds and organize a charity dinner to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer

The fact thata specialist in digestive cancers being invited to 7h50 with Maïwenn is no coincidence. The director has in fact explained that she regularly consults Professor Pascal Hammel, since she tries to “raise funds and organize a charity dinner” to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer, which she believes is an insufficiently known disease.

For his part, Professor Pascal Hammel returned to the idea that this cancer is accompanied by symptoms. “The first signs are sneaky and banal: fatigue, weight loss, chronic diarrhea. People don't necessarily think about that. Obviously, when you have typical pain in the pit of the stomach that goes to the back, there, it's late. (…) the disease has gone beyond the pancreatic gland.”he stressed on France Inter.

Maïwenn also wanted to emphasize the importance of fighting this disease when it occurs. “It’s important to say it, because the word metastasis is so scary, that it’s not ruined when there are metastases. You have to fight, be surrounded, be loved”.
